Best purchase ever
I decided to get rid of my bed and to get a Japanese futon to sleep on. It took me a while before I finally decided to buy it. I wish I would have bought it sooner. I originally had a foam mattress from IKEA that lost its form over time and was no longer comfortable and was causing back pain. I wanted to buy a new bed but I wanted something cheaper and smaller than the queen size I had. This set ended up being a great buy for me. I put my futon on a hardwood floor. So it feels extra firm with some cushion. Firm beds are my personal preference. So this feels great on my back and I've been waking up early with more energy every day because I no longer have pain in my back. The pillow is very firm. The comforter is very fluffy, almost as much as the futon. If you want your bedding to be soft you will need to buy TWO FUTONS and use a regular pillow. One by itself on a hardwood floor will be very, very firm. It might be softer on carpeting but I only have hardwood floors and can't confirm that.I'm also six feet tall and it still feels comfortable. I'm considering buying the one that's 83 inches long, just for a little more foot space.Overall this was an amazing purchase.

my comfortable new bed
I love my futon. It's very comfortable. It seems to trap heat within without overheating you into a sweat. I've used normal blankets and felt cold or heavy comforters and felt too warm but with my futon, it feels just right. It's winter here and quite cold outside but I don't feel it.The space I save from not having a bed and folding up my futon and tatami mattress and putting them away really makes my room easier to move in and clean.Edit: Cleaning the shikibuton (bottom) is a little tough. Since I was in a situation where I needed to clean it, I asked a question https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx2SJUN9QLBOILC/ref=ask_ql_ql_al_hza before I went and used the internet's collective know-how to the best of my ability. With luck, I was able to minimize the damage to a small corner and since then, I was using multiple sheets to keep it clean before I found a proper cover for it.As the seller said, you really shouldn't try to clean the shikibuton and I recommend saving up enough to buy a cover alongside the set. It's also important to keep in mind the tatami mattress flooring also helps keep your shikibuton (and cover) clean by guarding it from the floor (includes defending against any sharp objects that you may have missed while cleaning or overlooked; ie: thumbtacks, glass, staples, etc.).This is my first traditional Japanese futon. I only use my futon with a tatami mattress.Review after 17 days of use.Edit: 54 days now and I still agree with my sentiments above.Edit: It's Feb 2, 2022, 2 years after the original review and I still agree with my sentiments above.

Great for bad backs.
I suffer from moderate scoliosis and have moderate back pain most of the time. I've tried firm beds, I've tried memory foam, and I've tried the floor. The floor was the most comfortable (on carpet with a sheet laid on it) however it would press onto my skin after a night. I slept on the floor for about three months before purchasing this. Its just thick enough that it protects me from the floor and provides slight cushioning for my hips and shoulders when I sleep on my side. Its the best bed purchase one can make especially if you have a bad back and if you don't then this is a good preventive measure. You could use this combined with a memory foam topper underneath if one was interested in the Japanese look without the feeling, but at that point you might as well be sleeping on a regular bed. I would just encourage people to either use this alone or with the tatami mat they sell. There isn't a need for anything else. For reference too, I wrap the futon in a large sheet that is folded over it. Those futon covers are too expensive for what they are.

Very Happy!
I wasn't sure about tossing my mattress out for a Japanese futon, specially because I am pregnant. We bought our mattress years ago and was ok but after i started my second trimester I started experiencing severe back pain. This comes from a person who hasn't had back issues. So I was a bit concerned and blamed it on the pregnancy. It got so bad that getting out of bed was torture so I did some research and found that there are great benefits by sleeping on the floor. My husband bought me this futon and it came out flat, as expected, and you NEED to let it rest in the sun for approximately 2 hours on each side. The futon got really fluffy and I sleep much better wake up earlier. I don't have trouble getting off and up from the floor. It does take some time getting used to. It took me less than a week but I'm sure it depends on the person.I have cats who seem to want to destroy everything I love and cherish so I was worried they were going to rip this futon open. For some reason, my most evil cat won't get near it. She just sleeps next to me but never gets on it. Weird but great!

Don't waste your money like I did. Their return policy sucks.
So the "Futon" portion of this set is basically just a thin comforter type blanket. Not even the support of a Tatami mat. Also this companies return policy sucks. Don't waste your time and money on this product.

the kakebuton (comforter) is very warm (I'm a very cold-natured person) and comfortable, not too heavy
This bedding set is very soft of texture, the kakebuton (comforter) is very warm (I'm a very cold-natured person) and comfortable, not too heavy. The pillow is not super plump, but its not flat as a pancake either. I am giving just 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact that the shikibuton (mattress part) is too thin for me personally. I used to love firm mattresses, but seem to need super soft squishy ones now. If firm is what you need, this set is perfect; you can even include a 3-4 inch foam mattress under it, if needed. If you need something very soft and squishy to protect hips and other joints, I would not recommend this set unless you put it on top of a very, very thick, squishy foam mattress.
