Random House Books for Young Readers Super Friends: Flying High (DC Super Friends) (Step into Reading)

My five year old has recently progressed from reading the basic phonics books and Oxford Readers, to Dr Seuss's beginner books and I was hoping to provide more variety in the books he can read himself, so I chose this , as it is listed as "Step 1 is the perfect first step" for new readers. I can not really say I find this book ideal for a child who is only just starting to read. I was expecting something on the same level as the Dr Seuss books, short simple words that would be easy for my son to read. I knew they would need some relatively long words, as the characters have long names, like Aquaman and the Green Lantern, and I was even willing to excuse the inclusion of Gotham City. I did expect this book to fall into one of two patterns though, since it is designed to be among the very first books a child reads. I expected either a book based around easy to sound out phonetic words, or a book using primarily the most frequently used words for new readers, like the Dr Seuss books do, or the Oxford Readers. Instead I found a number of more difficult words for a child who has only just started reading, pigeon, machine, ostriches, teamwork etc.... Additionally there was absolutely no rhythm or rhyme, and many of the more difficult words could not be guessed at by the pictures.So, if this review were ending with my opinion, this would be getting a very low rating indeed. However as this is a child's book, it is not really what I think that counts. My son has a completely different opinion of this book. He did struggle to read it, but then he chose this book for me to read at bedtime, for a few nights actually. The story is short, so he has memorised it now anyway, but he carefully looks through, reading where he can, filling in the rest of the words from memory, and is actually learning every word in the book. So perhaps I should not complain that the book is too hard for new readers, but be glad that it has motivated him to struggle through harder words. I seemed to have been completely oblivious to the fact that having Super Heroes makes a powerful motivation for a child to read this book. The book may be difficult for a beginner to read, but it is well illustrated and the story is sound. Even my 2 year old enjoys this book just as a bedtime story.This book is sure to be a big hit with any child who loves Super Heroes, and while a bit difficult for a step 1 reader, amy well motivate a child to read at a higher level.

Bought at the same time as the Super Friends toys this book is a bit more difficult than the 'phonic reader' series BUT it has super-heroes which is a great catch. Big, bold, bright colours and some simple text. Usual problem of being read so often it's now remembered rather than read but I am sure the content added to school's encouragement to read.p.s. This was bought for 4-5 year old.

The 5 year old boy loves this book! It is ideal for a superhero fan just learning to read with short, simple sentences and story lines.
