A real futon style mattress, not a giant cushion

In the next paragraph I wrote who this mattress is for, this paragraph is my personal experience. I have chronic lower back pain, and the majority of mattresses I try make it hard to sleep because after a few months they will start to sink, even a little, in the center. If you sleep on your back or belly or toss and turn, you notice this quickly and it can lead to additional pain. After trying 4 mattresses ranging from $500-$1,500, I realized I needed something harder than the hardest mattress on the market and switched to futons. After three futon purchases (two on Amazon), this one is the clear winner for my needs and I can finally stop searching, but it probably is not for everyone.I recommend this mattress for someone looking for:An extra firm bed: It still has some give, but the 185N and 30D mean it is stiff. It is perfect if you have back pain and know you need a firmer mattress. It is not a sinking feeling like memory foam, but rather a bouncy feeling.A Japanese style sleep: Emoor is based in Japan, but this mattress specifically is far more like the modern style of value futons you find in japan because of the lower maintanence needs and better sturdiness than a traditional cotton futon.Tried a traditional futon, or a futon on amazon with no density rating, and experienced that "bottoming" feeling where you hit the floor: This futon is excellent in that you will not reach the bottom of it, so you never feel like the mattress is not supportive enough. Not a mattress topper: so many "futons" in the US are just mattress toppers. If it can be used as a mattress topper, it is definitely not firm enough to act as a bed on the floor or on a frame. Keep that in mind when choosing any traditional futon mattress.Side note, the newton and density ratings are systems used in Japan. They help make things way more clear, and I'm not sure why we haven't implemented a similar form of standard for judging hardness of a mattress or durability in the US. It also is no surprise the majority of futons available in the US fail to include any ratings. Will update the review if anything changes in terms of durability (that sinking in the middle I mentioned as an issue in other mattresses above).

Great Mattress

It is thin compared to a normal mattress.Great value for the money pretty high quality of build.Seems to be a bit wider than a normal queen size mattress.Would buy again. It solved my back pain and need for a firm mattress.

I love this futon - it's exactly what I wanted.

It's exactly what I wanted - very firm with just enough thickness to not make it feel completely like I'm sleeping on the floor. No weird smells when I opened it, and very pleased with this. I chose this pleated padded version to prevent lumps from forming from the inner padding moving around. It feels very much like the extra firm mattresses I slept on while in Japan. Make sure you buy a firm, thick, supportive pillow if you use this futon mattress as a side sleeper.

My first floor futon mattress.

Comfortable. Much more than a camping pad. I do notice when picking it up that it leaves a lot of grey fibers. Look like cat hairs on my black bedding. It’s spring temps and I do get some moisture build up on the floors, so I do have to air this out daily. This is my experience, so far.

More firm and less sinking than a traditional futon, so a good in between option.

I have been looking for a good mattress and decided to go with a traditional Japanese futon. They are great if you have the right underlayment. And you keep up with the daily maintenance of it. Once you are done sleeping, you will religiously fold away your futon and air it out, so it doesn’t get moldy. Well I am a bit too lazy for that and so my original futon started to get some mildew on the underside of it. Luckily we caught it in time and the mildew stains have gone and not come back. But it was a good example of being lazy and not airing it out and folding it up.Now comes this mattress, which is a hybrid of a Japanese tradition futon and a western foam mattress. It is quite a bit more heavy, thick and cushy as well. But it is still foldable and light enough to move around. I find it a nice midway point between the two. But as i mentioned it does also need the right underlayment. If you sleep on the ground and are used to a quite firm mattress you should be fine. Even if you are sweaty like me. You still have to air out the mattress just not daily. If you have it on a platform bed frame you should get a slightly softer feel to it if you frame has a bit more give.So thickness and cushiness of western mattress and still portability of futon, and also ability to air it outside in nice warm weather. Best of both worlds for me. But I think it is still a bit too firm, and could be just a bit thicker for me to provide that perfect feeling.

Firm, good for stomach sleepers

I bought this and the Fuli Japanese floor mattress also on Amazon. It is thicker than the Fuli so I don’t feel the slats on my box spring (from my previous mattress set) thru it. W the Fuli, I felt the slats. The Fuli is too thin- a little better than a mattress topper. It’s firm, so is good for stomach sleeping; but too firm for side sleeping. I’m 5’9,150 lbs, w hips that had nowhere to go on such a firm surface. So I put the Fuli on top of this and fixed that problem. Basically, I ended up needing both futons to make one good firm mattress. Still cost less than a good firm mattress, although don’t know how long it will last.Bottom line-I recommend this for stomach sleepers w lower back pain from stomach sleeping.
