Natural color option
Used this for a cake for my daughter to color the frosting pink. It had minimal flavor, so it was perfect for our sweet treat. Color was great for a natural option. I have plenty left over, so I will get many uses from one jar!

A little speckled, tastes okay but takes a lot
It takes a lot of powder to achieve a red shade in frosting. Smells odd but the taste isn’t too overbearing. Will not achieve a true red but still a great dye alternative. Looks a little speckled.

Food coloring
Works well for food coloring but has an awful smell. Can't taste or smell once in food.

It doesn't work
I attempted to make a red velvet cake twice. I used the whole jar and the cake still turned out chocolate colored. I used a quarter cup of cocoa the first time, the second attempt I used two tablespoons of cocoa and the cake still turned out brown.

Vibrant color, not quite red. definitely beet color, purplish pink, but vibrant nonetheless. doesn't taste much of beets though

Very strong beet flavor and minimal coloring
This Nutricost "Red Plant Based Food Coloring From Beet Root Powder" is a decent red color in the powder form in the jar but fails to deliver in coloring frosting. I got it primarily for frosting but instead of red, it's more of a pinkish-purple color and is quite 'gritty' colored; meaning it is a pink/purple with darker colored flecks all the way through that don't mix in completely. In addition to the lack of true, good red coloring, the overwhelming taste and smell of beets was just too strong and my frosting tasted and smelled like beet powder; even with a lot of vanilla and almond extract added to try to mask it.
